Changes to Drinking Water Legislation



The DWI in the first information letter of 2018 have written to water companies regarding the publication of four new statutory instruments relating to the regulation of public and private water supplies in England and Wales that are in force or will be coming into force shortly. The letter below summarises the key aspects of this new legislation and the forward process for the update of the Inspectorate’s guidance documents.

risk-based approach to monitoring provided water companies and water supply licencees

audit and check monitoring

monitoring variations

monitoring for plumbing metals

collection and analysis of samples

analytical methods

uncertainty of measurement

sampling requirements for drinking water provided in static tanks and bowsers
